Sweeney Shines In Tuscon

(1-4) Arizona 0 - (#3 5-0) California 70

TUSCON - The Arizona wildcats welcomed California today, if sweltering heat could be considered welcoming. The temperature topped 100 and would test Cal's conditioning and 18-game win streak. Arizona has continued to disappoint, so a win over the defending Pac-10 champs could raise spirits in Tuscon, but nobody is holding their breath.

Nobody is clear how Arizona won a game so far after Cal was done with them. Arizona was never really in this game and struggled to hold the Golden Bears to 70, if Beau Sweeney and Marvin Jones hadn't taken a back seat to the running game in the second half it could have been much worse. Sweeney went 15/19 and found Jones five times, one of Jones' TD catches was for 80 yards and made the Wildcat secondary look like a practice squad. HB Darrell Green also tormented the secondary with seven catches for 81 yards and 2TD.

Cal's defense produced their fourth shutout of the season, and looked like a beast against the Wildcat spread. Coach London's blitzing schemes and the play of Chris Martin were too much for Arizona. Adding to Arizona QB Nick Foles' bad day were his two TAINTS, one of them by hot CB Vaschel Samuels. Coach Stoops may not be able to keep his job much longer after this game.
