Golden Bears Open Season With Utah Blowout

(0-1) Utah 0 - (#9 1-0) California 56

SALT LAKE CITY - California opened their 2011-2012 campaign in hostile territory against the Utah Utes, ranked in the Top 10 and looking to stay there. Utah's Kyle Whittingham and the MWC has been looking forward to knocking off a ranked opponent, and a weakened highly ranked Cal was a perfect target.*

Samuels puts an end to Utah's dreams of glory

Cal's experiences against Oregon and Nevada proved to be valuable as Cal's new-look defense completely swallowed up Utah's spread attack. Utah couldn't run the ball and had absolutely no answer for Chris Martin off the edge. Utah's QB Jordan Wynn lived out a personal nightmare and threw four INTs, one of them a 75 yard TAINT by Vachel Samuels, two each to Samuels and freshman Terrance Miller.

Anyone worried about Cal's offense left this game feeling much better. The running game wasn't as explosive as last year, but the passing game was much improve. WR Marvin Jones stepped up big time and gave the Utes' secondary headaches all game. QB Beau Sweeney looked excellent and went 12/14 including an 80 yard strike to Jones to open up the second half. If the Golden Bears can continue at this pace we may see them in contention for a BCS bowl game once again.

*Side Note : I intentionally scheduled Utah and Colorado this season, sadly I couldn't figure out a way to reorder all of the conference to create a Pac-12.
