(#6 4-0) California 63 - (4-1) Oregon 3
SAN FRANCISCO - Cal's conference schedule opened today with a game against the hated Oregon Ducks. AT&T park filled with quacking fans wondering what has happened to their once mighty team, and head coach Chip Kelly has been rumored to be on the hot seat. A win over #6 California would help him keep his job, but fans in Eugene want conference titles. Cal was coming off a bye week and facing an undefeated Oregon, so fans feared a let down.
Oregon started off on the right foot, and took their first posession deep into Cal territory. Cal hadn't allowed a single point this season, so having someone inside the 10 was a new challenge. Luckily for the Bears a well timed sack put Oregon into 4th and long, forcing a field goal. Oregon managed to lead 3-0, and then all hell broke loose for their offense. QB Darron Thomas was able to find a few receivers for key first downs and pass for 215 yards, but he was constantly relegated to targetings speedy HB LaMichael James underneath. Thomas' day was completed with a 50 yard TAINT to CB Terrance Miller, a perfect ending to an imperfect game.
The best answer to Cal's offense was to keep them off the field, but this wasn't good enough for Oregon. QB Beau Sweeney had an incredible game and needed only 8 completions to throw for 287 yards and 4 TD. The best overall performance of the game was freshman HB Darrell Green. Green rushed for 104 yards and a TD on 6 carries and caught 2 for 64 yards and a TD. Green has started to emerge as a serious weapon on offense and could take over the starting HB job at this rate.
