Cal Stomps First LA School

(5-0) California 31 - (2-4) UCLA 7

BERKELEY - After a week off the Golden Bears prepared to host the first LA school of the season. Rick Neuheisel would come into the game needed a win, and knocking off an undefeated Cal would build some seriously needed momentum.

Unfortunately for UCLA this would not be their game to build any kind of moral consensus on. The Bruins didn't have much going for them on offense, especially their running game. Cal's defense blanketed UCLA's running game and surrendered only 13 rushing yards on 12 attempts. The Bruins threw the ball over and over, but this only made Cal's job easier.

With UCLA unable to move the ball Cal's offense was able to sit back and grind out a victory. Like they have all season the Bears looked to HB Shane Vereen to carry the offense, and he did just that. Vereen carried the ball a season high 30 times for only 139 yards, but found the endzone 4 times. Vereen continues to lead the nation in rushing yards, but has yet to garner serious Heisman buzz.
