Washington

(#2 12-0) California 63 - (#17 7-4) Washington 0

BERKELEY - With the Pac-10 title already under their belt the Golden Bears would shift their focus to a National Title bid. Cal couldn't be knocked out of a Rose Bowl bid, but a slip up against the hungry Huskies could leave them thinking about what could have been. Steve Sarkisian and his crew have enjoyed quite a turn around, and a win today would guarantee a 2nd place finish in the conference.

Washington would start the game with promise, and QB Jake Locker would look like an elite QB, but Cal's defense stepped up and stopped a promising drive. Washington's rushing attack would look frail for most of the game, but once in a while the read-option would catch Cal off guard. It was obvious that Coach London was focused on keeping Locker in the pocket, this gave speedy HB Chris Polk a few openings, but not enough to make a difference.

With Washington's offense contained the Golden Bears were able to play their broken record all game long. Kevin Riley had a good game, going 14/16, mostly because Washington had their eyes glued on the backfield. Shane Vereen added yet another 200 yard game to his Heisman resume, and left the game in the 4th quarter feeling good about his season. With the game in hand Cal brought in the reserves and Covaughn Deboskie-Johnson ran for 52 yards and a TD to chew up the clock and send the Huskies packing.

Bears Retain Axe

(#3 11-0) California 35 - (6-5) Stanfurd 7

BERKELEY - With the Pac-10 title and The Axe on the line stanfurd would not need much motivation to win this game. The Cardinal have not forgotten Cal's last second win in Palo Alto last year, so wrecking Cal's chances at the Pac-10 and a possible National Title game berth would be more than enough to make up for their 6-4 record.

As soon as Stanfurd's QB Andrew Luck too the field it was apparent that Cal would have their hands full. Luck proved hard to bring down and even worse was very accurate, and went 12/16. Unfortunately for Stanfurd their luck ended there as Cal completely shut down their running game. Once the Cardinal couldn't run they were able to keep Stanfurd's passes short and underneath.

Chris Martin makes it tough for Andrew Luck

Cal's offense looked like a broken record as Shane Vereen carried the ball for a new season high of 35 times. Stanfurd couldn't handle to Bears crushing attack and could do little but watch Vereen walk into the endzone again and again. With a hefty lead Cal ran the clock out with Vereen and Deboskie-Johnson eating up yards and keeping Luck off the field. As the clock hit 0:00 Cal secured their third consecutive Big Game win and the outright Pac-10 title, and most importantly their first trip to the Rose Bowl since 1959.

Ducks Stop Quacking In Berkeley

(#4 10-0) California 42 - (#24 6-4) Oregon 0

BERKELEY - The quacking could be heard all around Berkeley this morning as the Golden Bears hosted Chip Kelly as his reigning Pac-10 champs. Oregon has started the season 6-3, but remained ranked and in the hunt for a title repeat. The biggest story for Oregon has been their off field drama, mainly the dismissal of QB Jeremiah Masoli. Masoli's replacement, Justin Roper, has played well but the 6-3 record is not what they were looking for.

Cal was well prepared for Oregon's spread attack, and all the quacking fan could do was watch in horror. Justin Roper could not settle into his game, and Cal's exotic blitzes and edge rush completely shut down their running game. Roper looked good passing to speedy HB LaMichael James, but these passes never amounted to anything substantial. At the end of the day Oregon left with a meager 106 yards of offense.

Vereen, Heisman hopeful

Despite knowing what Cal was going to do, the Ducks could not stop Shane Vereen. Vereen carried the ball a season high 32 times and probably could have carried it more. Oregon was sucked into trying to stop Vereen, which made Riley's job very easy. Riley went 7/9 and hooked up with Michael Calvin again for his only TD. Cal's offense completely dominated and put the Golden Bears in a position for an outright Pac-10 Title as long as they could win one more game.

S.Vereen (Cal) - 204YDS 5TD

Cal Crushes Cougars

(#5 9-0) California 52 - (3-6) Arizona State 0

PULLMAN - California continued their northern trip with a stop in Washington. With a #5 ranking and a 3-5 Washington State on the menu Cal's fans could expect a 9-0 team in Berkeley on Sunday.

This game was not much a surprise to anyone, and the final scored shocked nobody. Cal did what they have done all season and gave the Cougars a heavy dose of Shane Vereen. Vereen carried the ball 30 times and found the endzone 5 times. Riley was also sharp and went 11/15, finding his new favorite receiver Michael Calvin for one of his two TD passes.

Cal's defense played well and held Washington state to 98 yards of total offense. Cal would board the bus and prepare for a three game home stand that would decide the Pac-10.

Golden Bears Survive Corvalis Scare

(2-5) Oregon State 14 - (#9 8-0) California 17

CORVALIS - Cal would walk into this game ranked in the top ten and wary of a trap. The Bears have done well when expectations are low, which is true of this season, but the #9 hanging over their heads would give Oregon State some extra incentive to win this game. The Beavers were a popular dark horse pick to win the Pac-10, but their 2-4 start has dashed those dreams.

Coach London was right to see this game as a potential trap as Cal fell behind 14-0 in the first half. The Beaver's QB Ryan Katz came into this game well prepared and gave Cal headaches all game. Katz went 15/16 and managed to spray the ball all over the field, which made HB Jaquizz Rogers job that much easier. Rogers found the first down line time and time again and kept the Beavers in this game.

After a half-time talk Cal came out and gave the Beavers all they could handle. Oregon State's stout defense managed to hold Vereen to 108 yards, his lowest total of the season, but they failed to keep him out of the endzone. Cal managed to turn a Ryan Katz INT into a TD after Riley hit WR Michael Calvin for a 14-14 tie. With the ball back in their hands late in the game the Golden Bears had their chance to close it out. Coach London resisted the temptation to put the game in Riley's hands, avoiding the hometown hero storyline, and went to Vereen and Deboskie-Johnson to eat away the clock. Cal secured a much needed first down late in the game and P/K Brian Anger nailed a FG as time expired.

Sun Devils Torched In Berkeley

(#16 7-0) California 70 - (2-5) Arizona State 0

BERKELEY - With USC in the rear view mirror and a #16 ranking the Bears looked to continue their success against conference foe Arizona State. The Sun Devils have struggled quite a bit this season, but their offense would come into this game as a major concern for Cal. Arizona State's biggest problem would be their defense, which has proved porous all season.

Arizona State did little to win this game and Cal did everything right. The Sun Devils powerful spread offense could only muster 76 yards, and managed a whopping 4 turnovers. The turnovers absolutely killed the Sun Devils as Cal scored 28 points off of them.

Vereen makes it six.

Cal's gameplan was very familiar as Shane Vereen continued to lead the nation in rushing yards. Vereen carried the ball 23 times and found the endzone 6 times. The success of Vereen and the effective nature of Cal's defense have made things much easier for the Golden Bears, and at this rate Cal's chances of winning the Pac-10 look good.

Cal Shocks Trojans On The Road

(#11 4-2) USC 0 - (#25 6-0) California 42

LOS ANGELES - California hit the road for the second leg of their LA school battle and found a hostile crowd waiting for them in the LA Coliseum. The Trojans have made their meeting with Cal an annual disappointment for Bears fans, and with the Pac-10 crown up for grabs the Trojans would not like to change the script. Cal entered this game ranked for the first time this season.

"The Trojans are an excellent team", said Coach London prior to the game, "but that doesn't mean we can't win. We have nothing to lose here, and Kiffen has alot of heat on him. My guys like our chances."

Coach London must have seen into the future because Cal started off with a bang and never let USC get into the game. Cal went right to their running attack and Shane Vereen ran all over the Trojan defense, adding insult to injury with a 99 yard TD run with 0:32 on the clock in the second quarter. The Bears' offense managed to score quickly time and time again and put all the pressure on the Trojans' offense.

Vereen heads in for his third TD.

USC's offense and defense looked lost and confused all game. The Trojans showed they did not deserve their #11 ranking and find themselves looking up at Cal and Oregon. The USC defense looked particularly bad and were made to look foolish by Cal's slot receiver Michael Calvin. Calvin managed to torch USC's secondary for 137 yards and 2TD on only three catches.

Cal Stomps First LA School

(5-0) California 31 - (2-4) UCLA 7

BERKELEY - After a week off the Golden Bears prepared to host the first LA school of the season. Rick Neuheisel would come into the game needed a win, and knocking off an undefeated Cal would build some seriously needed momentum.

Unfortunately for UCLA this would not be their game to build any kind of moral consensus on. The Bruins didn't have much going for them on offense, especially their running game. Cal's defense blanketed UCLA's running game and surrendered only 13 rushing yards on 12 attempts. The Bruins threw the ball over and over, but this only made Cal's job easier.

With UCLA unable to move the ball Cal's offense was able to sit back and grind out a victory. Like they have all season the Bears looked to HB Shane Vereen to carry the offense, and he did just that. Vereen carried the ball a season high 30 times for only 139 yards, but found the endzone 4 times. Vereen continues to lead the nation in rushing yards, but has yet to garner serious Heisman buzz.

Bears Open Pac-10 With Desert Victory

(1-3) Arizona 0 - (4-0) California 28

TUSCON -
California opened their Pac-10 schedule today under the blazing Arizona sun. After posting such horrible numbers on pass defense last season facing Arizona's Air Raid offense would be an unpleasant prospect. Arizona would come into this game looking to right their ship after a disappointing 1-2 start.

Unfortunately for Arizona's coach Stoops Cal would do their best to get him back on the hot seat. Arizona's offense was bland and couldn't do much of anything. Once Cal managed a lead they clamped down on their passing game and let them run out of the spread all they wanted, which wasn't productive at all. Arizona QB Nick Foles made some decent passes, but in the end walked away with 90 yards on 25 attempt. Cal sophomore Josh Hill picked off Foles, ending any chance at a decent outing.

Vereen tormented Arizona all day.

The big story of today's game was Cal's offensive line absolutely manhandling Arizona's defense. Cal ran the ball with impunity and scored 3 rushing TD to take command of the game. Kevin Riley managed to break his INT streak but barely threw the ball with 11 attempts, if Cal continues their success on the ground Riley can continue limiting his attempts.

California Gets Lucky In Reno

(2-1) Nevada 7 - (3-0) California 38

RENO - The Golden Bears would make the short trip past Lake Tahoe to visit Nevada for their first away game of the season. Much like UC Davis, the Bears were favored to win this game. The biggest concern going in would be Nevada's high powered offense driven by dual-threat QB Colin Kaepernick and 1000 yard rushers Vai Taua and Luke Lippincott.

"Keapernick will be a concern," said Coach London. "He threw for over 2000 and rushed for over 1000, can't take that lightly. We are an inexperienced defense, so we need to stay as disciplined as possible."

Nevada didn't have much to offer on either side of the ball today. They had absolutely no answer for the Cal running game and let HB Shane Vereen stomp all over them. QB Kevin Riley looked better but threw a INT for the third game in a row, not a good sign for the Pac-10 schedule.

Cal's defense was well prepared for the Kaepernick-Taua attack and halted Nevada on all but one drive, their only score of the game. Nevada couldn't do much through the air, so Coach London's defense was comfortable giving them the run, but even that didn't net much. In the end Cal won comfortably.

Bears Look Sharp In Home Win Over Buffs

(2-0) California 31 - (1-1) Colorado 9

BERKELEY - Fans got to see Cal face their first FBS opponent today by hosting Colorado on a cold and overcast day in Strawberry Canyon. Cal haven't faced Colorado since a 31-17 road win in 1982, and the series is tied 2-2, so both teams would be facing unfamiliar opponents.

Colorado started the game by fumbling the ball away inside Cal's 15, but their defense stood pat and held the Bears to a FG inside the 5. The Buffs continued their defensive ways and stifled Cal's QB Kevin Riley and managed to go into the half with a 9-3 lead.

The second half was a completely different story for Cal as HB Shane Vereen took over the game. Vereen helped take the pressure off floundering Riley and allowed the Golden Bears to start scoring. Vereen found the endzone twice (rushing and receiving), and the Bears defense shut out Colorado to close out the game. Colorado didn't help themselves by fumbling the ball twice inside Cal's 20.

Cal Runs Over UC Davis

(1-0) California 77 - (0-1) UC Davis 0

BERKELEY - Cal opened their 2010 campaign with a severely lopsided win over UC neighbor Davis. Nobody expected much from UC Davis, and Cal's offense simply overpowered them from the start. Cal's HB Shane Vereen led the first half charge with a great warm-up performance, and senior QB Kevin Riley didn't need to do much at all. With a sizeable halftime lead the Bears subbed in their second team offense, giving QB Beau Sweeney and HB Covaughn DeBoskie-Johnson a chance to rack up some yards.

The Bears defense was dominant, which surprised nobody. Freshman DE/OLB Chris Martin earned the starting nod and showed how explosive he could be by destroying UC Davis from the edge. Nothing much can be learned from this game aside from the fact that Cal is at least better than an FCS school.
